Giving the Gift of Time

When Tyler retired, he was looking for a something to do with his newfound time. He soon realized that the perfect opportunity had been in front of him for much of his life.

“My dad volunteered at a food bank for decades, and he provided me a good model. When he reached the age that I am now, he started volunteering, so when my time came, it was a natural evolution.”

Tyler volunteers each week at Mission Services’ Good Food Centre, assisting clients with picking up groceries, answering any questions that they have, and ensuring the shelves are stocked with food. He previously worked in the social services sector, in the areas of community mental health and child welfare, which helped him gain valuable personal skills that he can now use in the GFC.

“It’s meaningful. I love the social interaction of it. It’s a good feeling and I love coming here.”

His work and life experiences also allow him to set an example for the younger volunteers at the Good Food Centre, much like his father did with his own volunteering.

“I really like working with the students and the young people. I’m happy to share my experience with them, and I want to see them be idealistic and eager to make a difference.”

Tyler’s journey with Mission Services began as a financial donor, and he began volunteering in the Good Food Centre in January 2023. In Fall of 2024, he joined our board of directors. He says as long as he has the strength, he’ll keep finding ways to help out.

“I’m still too young and energetic to slow down like most retirees do. I’ve still got a lot to give.”

Volunteers play a vital role here at Mission Services, contributing not only their time and dedication but also a deep sense of compassion and commitment shaped by their own life experiences.

"Volunteers are the backbone of everything we do," said Cherrise, Volunteer and Student Placement Coordinator at Mission Services. "With the ongoing expansion of our programs, their support enables us to meet the growing needs of our community and make an impact that would otherwise be impossible."

This group reflects diverse cultures, backgrounds, and experiences, all united by a shared goal of making a positive impact in their community.

"Each individual brings a diverse background and new insights on how we can enhance the support we provide to our clients," Cherrise said.

Volunteers contribute across a variety of programs at Mission Services, including assisting in shelter kitchens, facilitating craft groups at Willow’s Place, supporting the Good Food Centre, and helping with our 196 Program, where volunteers mentor youth, participate in activities, or offer their time and companionship.

Groups from churches, sports teams, corporations, and even fraternities have the opportunity to spend a morning or afternoon sorting food at the Good Food Centre. Cherrise emphasizes that, above all other qualities, a willingness to help is the most essential.

"If you're interested in making a meaningful impact, we’d love to have you join us! We’ll help you find the perfect spot where your special talents can truly make a difference in helping others."
