Volunteer group posing in a line

It had been a couple of months since Beth Bromberg and her associates volunteered at Mission Services, but they were ready to get right back to it.

Their first experience at Mission Services was volunteering through the “Lawyers Feed the Hungry” program, which restarted in-person this past Spring. Lawyers from different offices across Hamilton are invited to help prep and serve a meal in Mission Services’ community kitchen. After Beth and her team volunteered with the program in June, they realized that they wanted to even do more to help and stepped out on their own to make a difference.

“Through our work as criminal defence and immigration lawyers, we are very aware of the need in the community and want to do our part and contribute,” Beth said. “We decided at dinner afterwards that we wanted to come back again every few months and bring our families this time.”

Beth, her team, and members of their families chopped vegetables and fruits, combining an opportunity to help those in need with some team bonding and a break from the office.

“Since the pandemic, a lot of people are looking for experiences that are not just fun for themselves, but can also help others,” said Katrine, Volunteer Coordinator at Mission Services.

Beth’s associate Kristian brought his wife along and said that it’s nice to get the best of both worlds.

“Because the profession that we have makes us work long hours, it’s nice to be able to spend time with my family while working,” Kristian said.
Both individuals and larger groups are welcome to volunteer at Mission Services of Hamilton, with a variety of placement opportunities available. Katrine said it’s encouraging to see familiar faces returning to contribute to their community.

“The environment here is welcoming, and people are seeing direct benefit from their time they are giving here,” she said.
